He went to Aiken High School, where he not only played football, but also ran track, played basketball, and competed in the shot putt.

He had a successful college career, earning first-team All-American honors in his junior year, while in his first year he won the national championship with the university.

After his successful years in college, William declared for the 1985 NFL Draft, and was selected as the 22nd pick overall by the Chicago Bears. In his first season, William appeared in all 16 games, nine of which were starts, including winning the Super Bowl with the team, however, he was forced out of his natural position due to a dispute between defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan and coach Mike Ditka. However, he stayed in the Bears until 1993.

After his stint with the Bears ended, William joined the Philadelphia Eagles, but didn’t have much success in the two years he had spent there, and as a result, he joined the NFL Europe Team, the London Monarchs, for which he played one season, before deciding to retire.

Mostly due to his size, William also started a fighting career; he appeared at WrestleMania 2 as a part of the battle royal event back in 1986. Regarding his personal life, William has been married to Valerie since 2007. Previously, he was married to Sherry Broadwater from 1982 to 2004; the couple had four children, before divorcing.

Due to his deteriorating health and the cost of treatments, William had put his Super Bowl ring on auction, and it was bought out by a 10-year child and his mother for $8,500, with the 10-year old returning the ring to William. However, he has auctioned it again as he was in dire need of money.
