Former American gymnast Shawn Johnson shone at the 2008 Summer Olympics seeking gold for the balance beam. Additionally, she won three silver medals on floor, all-around, and team. Johnson had enjoyed exponential success in her gymnastics career, having started training at the age of 3. Her breakthrough year was 2007, when she became a member of the USA senior team. She then had the best rookie season in American gymnastics history. Shawn Johnson has won five gold medals at the Pan American Games and three at the World Championships. Unfortunately, an injury to his ACL cut short his career, forcing him to retire just before the 2012 Olympics.

Bio (Age)

Johnson was born as Shawn Machel Johnson on January 19, 1992, Des Moines, Iowa, to Doug and Teri Johnson. She is an only child. As a child, Shawn had an unusual habit of climbing over cupboards and tables. As a result, her parents enrolled her in gym classes when she was 3 years old. Three years later, she would begin training at Liang Chow’s new gymnastics school in West Des Moines.

Her parents were right about her gymnastic abilities as Johnson improved quickly with training. She was training 25 hours a week instead of the recommended 40 hours. Nonetheless, with less than normal time spent on training, Johnson still managed to beat his peers.

In 2007, the year she turned professional, Johnson was awarded the Longines Prize for Elegance. She attended Valley High School but had to finish high school through home tutoring. In 2013, she was admitted to Vanderbilt University but withdrew before classes began.
