Murder Wiki: Who Is Judge Josephine Holmes Cook?

Josephine Holmes Cook, an Atlanta superior court judge, was the victim of a murder case as her son, Raynard Cook, killed her on October 16, 1996.

Cook was well-known for her religion, passion, and ambition. She had recently lost her re-election attempt to the bench, and some thought the incident was suicide.

The medical examiner discovered that Josephine Holmes had been shot once in the back of her right shoulder and quickly debunked that theory.

The case took an unexpected turn when the neighbor did not confirm Raynard’s story. Raynard had told cops that he’d found his mother in a pool of blood while cradling her in his arms. The neighbor claimed that there was no blood on him and, she told him to sit on her white sofa.

Raynard Cook was charged with malice murder, criminal murder, aggravated assault, and firearm possession. He had taken the “Glock” to a gun shop because it had a problem with the trigger mechanism.

Why Was Atlanta Judge Killed By Her Own Son Raynard Cook?

The prosecution claimed that Raynard Cook killed the Atlanta Judge out of rebellion and rage.

The police discovered Cook and her son, a student at Woodward Academy, a prestigious private high school, had a strained relationship. However, officers spoke with pupils at the school, who confirmed Raynard was present all day.

Detectives concentrated their efforts on locating the murder weapon as a Woodward Academy pupil revealed that Raynard purchased a Glock 9 mm pistol for $150 two weeks before his mother was shot.

A family member then informed detectives that Raynard claimed a masked guy compelled him to shoot his mother at gunpoint. Raynard Cook’s trial began on March 20, 1998, more than a year and a half after his arrest.
