Meet Jazz Thornton’s Father Was A Baptist Pastor And Her Mother, A Choir Singer

Jazz Thornton’s father was a Baptist pastor, and her mother sang in his church choir. She was raised by her mother in an absence of her father, which contributed to her depression and anxiety.

In an interview with Mumsatthetable, she stated that she was just an ordinary Kiwi child growing up in a rural town with a single mom. “I suffered the same issues that many of our children do, bullying, fatherlessness, and a lack of self-esteem.”

“Every year, half a dozen or more children under the age of 15 commit suicide in New Zealand, with many more attempting suicide and seriously considering it,” she added.

She first had suicidal thoughts when sitting in her bedroom at home, while her mother watched TV through the wall a few yards away. “I was overcome with sentiments of helplessness. I felt useless and burdensome to everyone who knew me,” she continued.

According to her interview, over the following eight years, she attempted suicide 13 times, getting near a few times. She was even discovered unconscious, calmed down by police, forcefully restrained, hospitalized, and placed in a psychiatric facility under a legal order.

In spite of all these efforts she still attempted suicide several times. At first, her suicide attempts were frequently motivated by ideas like, “I don’t want to die, but I can’t keep living like this, so this seems like the only alternative.”

However, as she grew older and her fear of abandonment began to surface, her suicidal tendencies shifted to a strong want to die. She was convinced that everyone would be better off without her.

Thankfully, she decided to contact her friends Wayne and Libby, and share her feelings with them. As part of her rehabilitation, Wayne, Libby, and Esther, began to help her retrain her brain.

They change the way she thought and reacted to things. And finally, she overcome her fear and anxiety and is now a mental health activist herself.

Her story is also narrated in “The Girl on the Bridge”, an award-winning documentary. It was released in Australia for the first time on October 10, 2020.
