What Is Wrong With Robert Kennedy Jr.’s  Voice?

Robert Kenedy Jr. suffers from spasmodic dysphonia, a kind of dystonia that affects solely the voice box. According to his interview with Oprah, Botox injections are therapy for it.

“And every four months, he got to insert a needle into his voice box.”

Although the ailment is not life-threatening, it does change the lives of those who have it. Experts believe that only.02 percent of the population suffers from spasmodic dysphonia.

It usually occurs between the ages of 20 and 50, and it affects women twice as much as males.

Patients claim that losing their voice impacts practically every area of their lives since it is their primary, intimate connection to the outside world.

It is a difficult struggle for the few doctors who research the uncommon condition to identify it, understand its causes, and teach clinicians to treat it.

However, people in the media who have spasmodic dysphonia, such as Kennedy and National Public Radio talk show presenter Diane Rhem, have helped bring spasmodic dysphonia to the public’s notice. This has increased awareness as well as financing and research initiatives.

Kennedy and Rhem both serve on the NSDA’s honorary board.

For the time being, scientists believe that the origin of spasmodic dysphonia is located in the basal ganglia. The basal ganglia are generally referred to as the brain’s “processing area,” and it is located between the cortex, or the “top management” section of the brain, and the brain stem, or the brain’s “foot soldier.”

The most sophisticated study, however, is still focused on identifying physical proof of alterations in the brain, as well as a genetic explanation for the condition.

For the time being, most spasmodic dysphonia sufferers must endure a three-year cycle of low-dose Botox treatments that leave their voices breathy, normal, and then stilted.
