Wrexham FC is the Welsh professional association football club that plays in the fifth-tier league of English Football. A coal and steel-built city, Wrexham has faced ups and down in the last few decades after failing to get a promotion to the top-tier league.

The oldest football club in Wales, and the third-oldest professional association football team in the world, Wrexham has one of the largest histories in world football since the industrial revolution when it was founded in 1864.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Bought Wrexham AFC

Last year since the Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney invested $2.35 million for Wrexham Football Club, the Welsh side has gained plenty of media attention, and major brands worldwide have offered sponsorship deals.
Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds and American actor Rob McElhenney bought the club through McReynolds Company LLC. The deal was accepted by 98.6% of Wrexham Supporter’s Trust members, and the deal was closed in February 2021.

Wrexham finished 2nd in the table during the 2021-22 season, losing to Grimsby Town by 5-4 in the extra time. After the 2.78 million investment in the club, it seems the club has begun its course to rise.

Previously not known as a football fan, Deadpool star and long-running It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia star Ryan wanted to bring the Welsh side back to the English Football League.

As the club was waging a comeback, the Hollywood duo bought the club in February 2021 to save its heritage. After the purchase, a docuseries, “Welcome to Wrexham,” was made, which premiered on August 25, 2022. The documentary includes how the actor duo comes about buying the club, its whole process, and why they choose Wrexham, in particular, to invest with their hard-earned cash. The series was aired on Disney+ all over England and Ireland.

Present Economical Condition of Wreham AFC

On June 30, 2021, the club published its annual report, which covered the ownership of Wrexham Football Supporters’ Trust until the actor duo took over in February last year. During the initial five months, the owners and the management used the time to understand the club. And prepare for the 2021/22 season and eye out the promotion to the top division.

Compared with its previous year, the club also made progress in terms of monetary value. The 2019/20 season had a turnover of 1.75 million euros. The following year the club made progress as the turnover hung around 1.478 million euros. However, there was an increased loss of over 400k from the 700k previous year.

Reason Behind Buying Wrexham AFC

For some reason, Reynold had the vision to turn Wrexham city into a global force while he was having a meeting with the club’s fans in late 2020. Following the trend of Hollywood celebrities buying the sports team, the duo invested 2 million euros in the club.

Nine out of 20 Premier League teams are owned by US celebrities. Given the club’s recent history, the duo’s investment can be seen as a positive investment that will help the club move forward in a big way.

Due to Covid restrictions, the duo attended their first-ever Wrexham game until October 26, 2021, after buying the club almost a year ago. It was a Conference Premier away game against Maidenhead United, which ended with a loss.

A-list Hollywood stars Reynolds and McElhenney choose the club to protect the heritage of the Wrexham community. The 156 years long history of the club needs to reach global force. The duo has given Wrexham supporters a sign of hope that they could return to the heights of the top-tier English football pyramid. Actor investor aims to grow the team, increase spectators, make a positive difference, reinforce Wrexham’s value & legacy, and renovate the Racecourse Ground.

Wrexham AFC Official Partners/Sponsers

Most recently, Wrexham AFC announced their new sponsor Lucas Oil based in the US and European/Uk, headquartered in Anglesey for two seasons, after the sponsorship ended with Wrexrent. Lucas Oil and Wrexham AFC signed the sponsorship deal in late May 2022.

Lucas Oil is a family-owned world’s leading manufacturer of engine oils, additives, and lubricants for the automobile. Having the global reach and reputation, Lucas Oil could establish Wrexham as a global force.

Furthermore, the club’s other two previous official partners have locally based Walian Trailer Manufacture and Ifor Williams, which signed the contract in 2016. Country Property Auctions and Barlows joined Wrexham’s official partnership scheme later.

Rise And Fall of Wrexham AFC

In the last 20 years, Wrexham fans and supporters have endured so much heartache and disappointment, with bad owners, management, and sometimes bad luck. However, things have taken a few turns as the actor duo bought the club in early 2021, giving the Wrexham community hope for promotion.

The Dragons haven’t secured a promotion, playing playoffs six times; the club has already played their 15th season outside the top-tiered 91 English football teams.

While the play has improved since the 2021/22 season, as they finished second in the National League last season, the squad still lacks a creative midfielder that has the potential to dictate the game under given circumstances.

How Much Are Wrexham AFC’s Player Paid?

Paul Philip Mullin is one of the high-profile signings of the Wrexham AFC. Mullin, who is the product of premier league giant Everton and Liverpool, now plays as a forward for Wrexham.

In 2021/22, his first season, Mullin netted 30 goals for the Wrexham team in the National League side. He finished winning the Player of the Season, Goal of the Season, and Top Scorer awards.

Mullin declined the Cambridge United offer and switched to the non-league in 2013. According to Cambridge, the center forwarder signed three year deal with Ryan & Rob’s Wrexham with a salary of whopping 200k euros annually.

Apart from Mullin, the club made two other prominent signings. Aaron Hayden, who previously played for Carlisle United, transferred to Wrexham as an ambitious signing with a reported salary of 100k euros. He began his career with Chelsea and Wolves dropping down to National League.

Wrexham’s other top signing was Ben Tozer, who joined Wrexham’s squad, dropping out of EFL team Cheltenham for a three-year deal. Former Cheltenham captain and Newport County defender Ben left League One to join National League side Wrexham for 200k a year.

Not to mention Jordan Davies, Wrexham’s product who scored 16 goals during the last campaign. The 24-year-old midfielder signed a three-and-half-year contract with Wrexham AFC, which will last until 2025.

Wrexham AFC seems to spend more money on players than an average top-tier league team pays, as two multi-millionaire Hollywood stars now back them. Just so their investment doesn’t go in vain, the club management should certainly sign players who are in top-tier leagues.

Wrexham AFC Net Worth In 2022

After the Hollywood duo bought one of the oldest and history-packed clubs in the world in 2021, Wrexham has been hitting the headlines and slowly gaining popularity in the global space.
