In the realm of Tamil Nadu politics, the charismatic actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth, affectionately known as the ‘Captain,’ experienced a significant setback in the 2016 elections. A two-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 2006 and 2011, Vijayakanth faced a challenging electoral contest in the Ulundurpettai constituency within Tamil Nadu’s Vilupuram district.

The 2016 elections proved to be a formidable battleground for Vijayakanth, and unfortunately, the outcome saw him lose both his seat and deposit. Contesting from Ulundurpettai, a constituency he had previously represented, the ‘Captain’ garnered a total of 34,447 votes. Despite his efforts, this vote tally landed him in the third position.

The electoral landscape was dominated by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), with their candidate R. Kumaraguru securing a resounding victory by polling 81,973 votes. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate G.R. Vasanthavel secured the second position with 77,809 votes, leaving Vijayakanth behind in a distant third place.

The loss of both the seat and deposit in the 2016 elections marked a notable chapter in Vijayakanth’s political journey. The Ulundurpettai constituency, which had been a stronghold for him in the past, witnessed a shift in political dynamics, leading to a challenging electoral outcome.

Vijayakanth’s political resilience, however, would be tested in subsequent years as he continued to be a prominent figure in Tamil Nadu politics. The setback in 2016, while a momentary defeat, did not diminish the ‘Captain’s’ influence or commitment to public service.

As the pages of Tamil Nadu’s political history unfold, the 2016 electoral setback serves as a reminder of the dynamic and unpredictable nature of politics, where even seasoned politicians like Vijayakanth face the ebb and flow of electoral fortunes. The Captain’s journey continued, marked by challenges and triumphs, contributing to the rich tapestry of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
