The Wachowski siblings Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski are directing partners in Hollywood. They were born three years apart in Chicago, Illinois.

The Wachowskis sisters worked together on numerous high-profile projects over the past 26 years. They are known for typically science fiction works with the movies such as “Bound,” “V for Vendetta,” “Jupiter Ascending,” and the Netflix series “Sense8.” The Wachowskis siblings produced “The Matrix” films before they transitioned and became known as the Wachowski sisters.

The Wachowski sister Lana Wachowski formerly known as Larry, was born on June 21 1965. Whereas Lilly Wachowski, formerly Andy, was born on December 29, 1965. Although born in the United States, they received their surnames from their Polish father, Ron Wachowski, who married nurse and painter Lynee Luckinbill.

However, they are collectively known as the Wachowski sisters after their transition. The sisters have a history of collaboration in writing and directing projects throughout their careers.

Who Are Wachowski Siblings And Are They Brothers Or Sisters?

Wachowski siblings were born as brothers but transitioned to sisters.

The duo have been known in the media as The Wachowski Siblings, The Wachowski Brothers and The Wachowski sisters.

They made their filmmaking debut in 1996 with Bound but are known for their masterpiece The Matrix after it became a massive box office hit. They were honoured with Saturn Award for Best Director. The Matrix was followed by additional films with two sequels, The Matrix Revolutions and The Matrix Reloaded, released in 2003.

Lana Wachowski

Lana Wachowski is the oldest of the Wachowski sisters, born on June 21, 1965. She was known as Larry before the transition in 2000.

Lana was married to Thea Bloom on October 30, 1993, for nine years. They were divorced in 2002. Lana is one of the well-read sisters of the Wachowski siblings. She enrolled at Bard College in New York. Still, she left the formal college education claiming the teachers had read half of the literature compared to her.

The Wachowskis wrote comic books for Marvel Comics’ Razorline imprint before entering the film business. They wrote for Epic Comics’ Hellraiser and Nightbreed comic series by horror author Clive Barker and for Marvel Comics’ Ectokid, published in 1993.

Lana Wachowski was awarded Human Rights Campaign’s Visibility Award in October 2012. She admitted in her acceptance speech that she had briefly considered suicide in her teens due to confusion about her gender identification. Lana and Lilly had not publicly announced Lana’s transitioning throughout the preceding ten years. Lana insisted that neither she nor Lilly had kept it a secret from her loved ones.

She made her directing debut alongside her sister Lilly in the 1996 movie bound.

Lilly Wachowski

Lilly Wachowski was known as Andy Wachowski before her transition in March 2016.

Mickey Ray Mahoney is her current partner. Lilly was married to Alisa Blasingame in 1991 but has no divorce records.

Like her elder sister, Lilly dropped out of Emerson College after graduating high school. Lilly and Lana’s road to and through success in Hollywood has been unusual, but they never left one other’s side. Lana and Lilly were raised in Chicago by their two sisters, Julie Wachowski and Laura Wachowski. The Wachowski sisters fell in love with movies at a young age and would spend hours at the movies with their parents.

Lilly made her first public appearance at the 27th GLAAD Media Awards. She won a prize for Outstanding Drama Series for her Netflix series Sense8. Lilly said after the performance that she didn’t regret attending the ceremony because she had a lot of support from his wife, friends, and family. After her major transition, she was proud of herself for showing up and receiving an award.

Julie Wachowski

Julie Wachowski is another sibling of the transitioned duo. Julie is a writer and education Instructor. She is a seasoned scriptwriter and Independent Consultant.

According to Julie’s Linkedin profile, She completed her Master’s degree in instructional design at the UNC at Chapel Hill and her bachelor’s degree in creative writing for the media at Northwestern University.

She is currently a WGA, RWA, MWA, and PTA member. She was chosen as a Writer in Residence at the prestigious Ragdale Foundation in 2010. Julie is experienced in the non-profit and creative production industries as a writer and adult educator for screenwriting and television. She engages in numerous kinds of storytelling, including fiction, features, blogs, and corporate marketing. She lives in the Midwest with her character-filled family.

Lilly, Lana and Julie have one more sister named Laura Wachowski.

Wachowski Brothers Images Before and After

Wachowski brothers before and after images show complete transformation. Lana came out in 2012, whereas Lilly in 2016.

Lilly clearly appears different from the images taken before and after the transition. She made an outward appearance with long hair, a dress, and high heels. She received full support from her sister Lana because she came out later. She thanked her family, who supported her with the money to pay for physicians and therapists. After the transition, the Larry and Andy Wachowski brothers changed their names to Lana and Lilly.

There were rumours that Lana Wachowski was transitioning in the early 2000s, but neither sister made any direct comments about it. In 2007, the producer of several Wachowski movies, Joel Silver, said that the allegations surrounding the transition were incorrect; they don’t do interviews, and people make things up.

Lana publicly announced her transition after Speed Racer’s release in 2008. Similarly, by December 2010, the newspapers started referring to her as Lana Wachowski and their team ‘Andy and Lana Wachowski.’ Hence, Lana made her first public appearance following her transition in a video detailing the making of Cloud Atlas in July 2012.

The Wachowskis followed up on the film’s success by leading The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, all released in 2003.

It became a huge commercial success and held the title of highest-grossing R-rated movie for over ten years until Deadpool came out in 2016. The Matrix Revolutions, released in 2021, performed moderately at the movie office and received mixed reviews from critics.
