Vera Nikolaevna Putina, born on September 6, 1926, rose to prominence in 1999 when she claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin was her son. This allegation contradicted Putin’s official biography, which indicated that his parents died before he took office.

While Putina’s assertions may be false or part of a publicity effort, they do highlight holes in the known narrative of Putin’s past. According to the official account, Putin’s parents were already in their forties when he was born, leaving a ten-year gap between the births of their previous sons, Albert and Viktor, who both died as children.

In comparison to previous world leaders, Putin’s autobiography contains little facts concerning his first ten years of existence. Putina lived in Metekhi, a village in the Kaspi Municipality about 18 kilometers east of Gori, Georgia. She said Putin’s father was Platon Privalov, a Russian mechanic who impregnated her while he was still married to another lady.

In the academic year 1959-1960, a person named “Vladimir Putin” was registered at the Metekhi school, with records stating his nationality as Georgian. Putina married Giorgi Osepahvili, a Georgian soldier who pressed her to forsake their son, Putin. In December 1960, she returned “Vova” (Vladimir’s nickname) to his grandparents in Russia.
