All freshman and transfer students are eligible to enroll as part of the team but they must pass through a background check and must possess strong leadership and enthusiastic quality.

The Spirit Squad is a whole form of the Texas Spirit program built from the combination of Texas Cheerleading, Texas Mascots, and Texas Pom.

The program also performs its duty as an all-time ambassador to the University of Texas. As it is the public face of the Uni, confidence, Independence and Charismatic Personality are the desirable qualities in its members.

Texas Longhorns Dance Team

The Dance Team of the University of Texas consists of 27 members. This competitive group represents the Uni in national as well as local dance competitions.

It is a Division IA squad and was established in 1977. The group specializes in Jazz and hip hops. it has been performing in the genre ever since its inception.

The Team in general doesn’t perform for athletic events including football. It is solely a competition-based squad participating in various contests including NDA camps, ADTS, and NDA Nationals.

The group is also responsible for holding seasonal showcases and appearing in multiple events organized by the university on various occasions.

The squad also organizes clinics and their tryouts take place every spring. Though they do not mark their involvement in cheering or performing at football games, they might have to give performances in some special football events at the request of the Athletic department.

Otherwise, they are completely a dancing group representing their university in a wide variety of competitions across the state and the country.

Texas Football Fight Song

The Longhorns take the “Texas Fight’ as their official fight song. It goes with the lyrics “Texas Fight, Texas Fight, And it’s goodbye to A&M….”

Sing along with the group:

“Texas Fight, Texas Fight,

And we’ll put over one more win.

Move along with the chorus:

Texas Fight, Texas Fight,

For it’s Texas that we love best.

Hail, Hail, The gang’s all here,

And it’s goodbye to all the rest!“

It was written by Colonel Walter S. Hunnicutt along with the director of the Marlin High School, James E. King. The song was written in response to Texas Aggies, the football group of Texas A&M University’s fight song “Farmers Fight”.

The song is sung to Taps, the fast tempo versions which are often heard in military funerals. Inspired by the same funeral song and Aggies’ lyrics, Hunnicutt wrote it down by replacing ‘Farmers’ with ‘Texas’. But it was written in a more march-like format.

The current adaptation of the words of the song was authored by “Blondie” Pharr who was the director of Longhorn Band and served in the position from 1917 to 1937.

Later in the summer of 1967 a member of the trumpet section, Charles “Buster” Griffith suggested a portion of the school’s alma mater, “The Eyes of Texas” to be included in the repeated strands. The addition became a tradition since the fall football game that season.

It is generally performed after every Touchdown or extra points made by the Longhorns. The song is also featured in other sporting events of the University of Texas.

There are several alternate lyrics which is rarely uttered including “Hail, Hail, the gang’s all here”. Fans most often replace it with “Give ’em hell, give ’em hell! Go, Horns, go!”.
