Rose Swisher – Bill Russell’s First Wife Was Mother Of Three Kids

Rose Swisher was the first wife of NBA legend Bill Russell and the mother of their three kids, Jacob Russell, William Russell Jr., and Karen Russell.

Although Bill Russell married four times, he only had children with his first wife, Rose.

Swisher and Russell were college sweethearts legally recognized as husband and wife on December 9, 1956. The couple stayed as a married couple for almost two decades. A total of seventeen years if you will.

The basketball star is also known as Bill, Mr. 11 Rings, and The Secretary of Defense. Rose is the mother of two sons, Jacob Russell and William Russell Jr., and a daughter named Karen Russell.

Rose’s daughter, Karen Russell, is a legal and political analyst and a blogger. She is a television pundit and a lawyer. Even after moving on from Rose, Bill did not have children from his other relationships.

On September 11, 2014, Rose Swisher, Bill Russell’s first love, passed away at age 78. The two former lovers first met while both enrolled in the same school.

Dorothy Anstett would be Bill’s second wife. In 1977, he married Dorothy in the thick of the debate about interracial relationships. Although interracial partnerships had just recently become accepted, they were unusual at the time.

When they married, Dorothy Anstett was 29 years old, and Russell was 43. Before they split in 1980, they lived together for a considerable time.

Russell later married Marilyn Nault, his third wife, in 1996. They remained together until she passed away in January 2009. Russell was also married to Jeannine Russell, his fourth wife, at the time of his passing.

Bill Russell Was Born To Parents Charles Russell and Katie Russell

Bill Russell was born to his parents, Charles Russell and Katie Russell, in West Monroe, Louisiana, on February 12, 1934.

Russell’s childhood was terrible as he was born into a family that faced racial discrimination daily. The Russell family regularly faced prejudice because Monroe was highly segregated like nearly all Southern towns and cities at the time.

Once, Russell’s father was forced to wait at a petrol station until the personnel attended to all the customers first. The attendant confronted him with a shotgun as he tried to leave and go to a different station, threatening to shoot him if he didn’t wait.

In another incident, a policeman stopped Russell’s mother while walking outside in a fancy dress. He told her to go home and take off the dress, calling it “another woman’s garb.”

The Second Great Migration started during World War II as many people of his race moved to the West in search of employment. When Russell was eight years old, his father relocated the family from Louisiana to Oakland, California.

They were impoverished there, and Russell spent his formative years in several public housing projects.

As sports journalist John Taylor observed, his father was described as a “stern, hard man” who started as a janitor at a paper factory, a typical Negro job, a low-paying and not academically difficult.

The elder Russell switched to driving trucks when World War II started. When Russell’s mother, Katie, passed away unexpectedly when he was 12 years old, it dealt him a severe emotional blow because he was closer to her than his father.

To be nearer to his kids, his father quit driving trucks and started working as a steelworker. Russell claimed that his father was his first hero as a child, followed by Minneapolis Lakers superstar George Mikan, whom he first met in high school.
