“I was brought up to believe that I can do anything I wanted to. If I didn’t succeed then I probably didn’t work hard enough … It never came into the calculation that maybe I didn’t succeed because I was a woman,” she said.

While the real world might not have been as kind, she thanks her parents for never making gender a reason for her to give up on something she wanted.

“Thank you for not making inequality an issue for me so I didn’t feel that I had to fight against it. I was surprised when I came up against it but it was something that I never felt I had to give in to because I was never prepared for the fact that I should give in to it,” she added.

“Too many girls around the world are denied the very basic right to education. It ensures that inequality is felt from birth. It ensures that girls are put at a disadvantage at a really early age,” she said.

But the fight to have a more gender-balanced world shouldn’t be a woman-only fight.

“Gender balance just with women, that’s not balanced. You need everybody to be involved in this,” she said, adding that she wouldn’t be where she is if her father hadn’t shown her that it’s alright for a girl to choose sports, or if her husband had told her to leave her career after the birth of their first daughter.

What’s important, she said, is that people are raised free from prejudice.

“You’re not born prejudiced. That starts later.”
