Paul attended Episcopal High School, and after matriculating went to Harvard University. During his time there, he played football and baseball while studying economics. After graduating in 1995, he then worked for the Canadian Football League team the Baltimore Stallions before heading to the American Hockey League team, the Baltimore Bandits.

In 1996, DePodesta secured his position in baseball, becoming an advanced scout for the Cleveland Indians for two years, and was then appointed as special assistant to General Manager John Hart. In 1999, he moved to become the assistant to general manager Billy Beane as part of the Oakland Athletics, becoming a key figure it what would be later known as “Moneyball”, essentially popularizing the use of sabermetrics. A book entitled “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game” was published by Michael Lewis, which revealed Beane and DePodesta’s methods for getting their 2002 20 game winning streak. However, Paul did not feel comfortable in the spotlight after the book’s release, regardless of the increase in his net worth.

In 2004, Paul was named as the general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers; only four younger people have been named general manager in baseball history. He made controversial decisions during his time as general manager, with some of them heading into success thanks to the use of his sabermetrics. However, other decisions didn’t pan out too well, and after producing one of the team’s worst seasons in 2005, he was fired by owner Frank McCourt, many speculating that an influence in firing Paul was due to “anti-moneyball” journalists, but his net worth grew.

In 2006, he was then hired to become the Special Assistant for Baseball Operations for the San Diego Padres, and two years later, he became their Executive Vice President. In 2010 he was hired by the New York Mets to become the Vice President of Player Development and Scouting.

During the same year, the film adaptation of “Moneyball” was released, and DePodesta’s character was given to actor Jonah Hill, though since he didn’t want his name or likeness in the movie, they changed the character to “Peter Brand”. DePodesta didn’t really like how he was portrayed, though he liked Jonah Hill and mentioned that it wasn’t the actor’s fault but more of a personal outlook – Hill would get an Academy Award nomination for the role. In 2016, DePodesta would be hired by NFL’s Cleveland Browns as their chief strategy officer.

For his personal life, it is known that Paul is married and has four children. He’s served as a keynote speaker in various business conventions.
