Mindy Kaling parents: Meet Avu Chokalingam and Swati Roysircar

Mindy Kaling’s parents are Avu Chokalingam and Swati Chokalingam. They both emigrated from India to the United States in the 1970s.

Mindy’s father, Avu, worked as an architect, while her mother, Swati, worked as an obstetrician/gynaecologist.

Mindy was born Vera Mindy Chokalingam in 1979 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and later changed her name to Mindy Kaling. She has a close relationship with her parents and has often spoken about their influence on her life and career.

Kaling has said she has never been called Vera, her first name, but has been referred to as Mindy since her mother was pregnant with her while her parents were living in Bengal.

They were already planning to move to the United States and wanted, Kaling said, a “cute American name” for their daughter, and liked the name Mindy from the TV show Mork & Mindy.
