Mike Whiteside Black Dog Salvage

In 1999, Mike Whiteside and his friend, Robert Kulp, decided to salvage pieces from a historical Roanoke building that was set to be demolished. At the time, they had no intention of starting a business, much less one that would gain international recognition.

The story that unfolded from that point was beyond what either of them could have ever imagined. Now almost 20 years later, and this business that was never meant to be has seen three locations, four iconic black dogs, one furniture line, and an exclusive TV series that is 9 seasons in.

He is the Co-Owner of Black Dog Salvage. Mike’s love of travel sealed him to a 15- year career as a professional sailor and yacht captain. Before he started the salvage business, Mike was a Navy parachute rigger and professional yacht captain.

Nowadays, when he is not swinging a hammer on the job site, he can be found in the woodshop working on his next project. He loves to tackle design challenges and uses his ingenuity to create one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture from salvaged materials.

His first job was bagging groceries at the Park-n-Shop in Charlotte, N.C. It was snowing and his mom called him and asked if he wanted to work. She was a checker there at the time. Way before bar codes. He walked about a mile through the snow and went to work. He was 15 years old.

One of the coolest things that he did is the Eiffel Tower in Columbus, Ohio. That’s not something that people do every day. Here he is hanging on top of an Eiffel Tower with a couple of ropes and he looks like King Kong up there. You’ve gotta start laughing at yourself like, “This is not normal.” Soon after, Mike from Salvage Dawgs toyed with the idea of skiing before going back to the seas as a deckhand. Fifteen years later, he left as a Captain with a Coast Guard Issued License. It was after this that he co-founded the Salvage Dawgs company and settled down with his wife.

Mike Whiteside salvage dawgs canceled 2020

It was a great run, but after eight years, 11 seasons, and 143 episodes, the reality show with Roanoke roots, Salvage Dawgs, is coming to an end. A combination of factors, including COVID-19 and changes at the DIY Network, played a role. DIY will become the Magnolia Network soon, and the channel did not pick up the 12th season of Salvage Dawgs.

“Are you disappointed you didn’t get a chance to do the big goodbye?” we asked Black Dog Salvage store owners Mike Whiteside and Robert Kulp. “Well, that’s what this is. This is the big goodbye,” Whiteside joked. Whiteside and Kulp said Salvage Dawgs far exceeded their expectations, and the series lasted much longer than anyone expected.

Their sense of humor and unique adventures have built a loyal following, including people like Mary and Joe Forbes and Elizabeth Mix, who were visiting Black Dog Salvage Friday morning. But Black Dog Salvage isn’t going anywhere, and the hosts of Salvage Dawgs will continue to interact with their audience through social media.

Black Dog Salvage has reopened after a temporary closure after the pandemic hit, and like other small businesses, the owners are hoping their customers will return. The main location in Roanoke has high ceilings and more than 40,000 square feet, plenty of space for social-distancing.
