Arlene Shechet was born in 1951 is an artist from the United States. She divides her time between New York City, Woodstock, and Kingston, New York, where she lives and works.

Buddhism affected Shechet’s early work, as evidenced by how he depicted stages of transition and Buddhist subject matter. Shechet created a series of plaster sculptures in the early 1990s.

The lumpy sculptures evolved into a family of Buddhas, supported by industrial and found elements and incorporating Buddhist iconography. Shechet was hired at the Dieu Donné Papermill in 1996.

Shechet grew up in the Queens neighbourhood of Forest Hills. She was born into an Ashkenazi Jewish family.

In 1920, Shechet’s grandparents arrived in the United States from Belarus.

Shechet graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Arts and the Rhode Island School of Design alongside a Master of Fine Arts in 1978. From 1978 to 1985.

Shechet taught at the Rhode Island School of Design and then from 1984 to 1995, at the Parsons School of Design. Shechet lived in TriBeCa for the majority of the 1990s, but in 2002 she moved to Woodstock, New York.
