Even then, he was considered to be one of the best high school quarterbacks in the whole USA in the matriculating class of 2006. He had already been praised for his performances and named to the “Parade” All-America Team and the USA Today Pre-Season Super 25 in 2005. The same year he won the MVP and Best Arm awards and was named the 2005 EA Sports National Player of the Year.

Matthew enrolled the University of Georgia where he played for the “Bulldogs” team, during which he was named SEC Freshman of the Week twice during 2006 season, Rivals.com’s National Freshman of the Week and 2006 SEC Coaches’ All-Freshman Team. In 2009, he decided to give up his senior season and enter the 2009 NFL Draft; analyst Mel Kiper, Jr. predicted that he would become the first pick in the Draft, and so it proved – in April 2009, Stafford signed a six-year contract with the Detroit Lions, at over $41 million guaranteed the largest to that point, and what a start to his net worth!
