Marcia MacMillan Triathlon
She has played out every possible scenario in her head. MacMillan has pictured herself falling from her bike, running out of energy, and even getting kicked in the face while swimming Lake Ontario.
MacMillan is terrified but prepared for the challenge. The CTV news anchor will face her fears head-on Aug. 10 when she participates in the Marc Angelo Iron Girl Canada Women’s Triathlon in Grimsby.
“The whole thing terrifies me,” said MacMillan. “Swimming might be the challenging part for me. I’ve envisioned every possible scenario … but it doesn’t matter. I’m not doing for time, I’m doing it to finish. I’m doing it for me.”
It began when she was out for a run. The whole left side of her body tensed up. MacMillan had to tuck her elbow in and propel with her right arm to finish the run.
“That was just the beginning of something that turned out to be much more serious,” said MacMillan, who urges women to tune into their bodies.
A short while later she started having chest pains on the left side.
“I thought I was just tired or had a knot. I thought it could be something stress-related in the shoulder,” said MacMillan.
A few days before the London Olympics MacMillan awoke around midnight struggling to breathe.
“I could barely breathe the pain had gotten so bad,” she said.
She went to the hospital thinking she could still make it to the studio for her 4 a.m. shift. She didn’t return to work for six weeks.
“They did a lot of tests and they came back saying I had a lot of blood clots in both lungs,” said MacMillan. “I was shocked.
“I’m very fortunate I went to the hospital when I did,” she adds. “I could have been much more serious. It can be fatal.”
MacMillan remained in the hospital for a week and had to take blood thinners for a year and a half. When she finally got off the medication, she started to think about competing in a triathlon.
