Kelly attended Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, California, and later went to New York City to study in HB Studio, then at the Beverly Hills Playhouse in California. She started her acting career in daytime soap operas, first appearing in the series “Loving”, before finding a long term role as Stephanie “Sam” Whitmore in the series entitled “Generations”. After being a part of that series for three years, she became part of the ABC drama “Homefront”. One year later, she was cast in the series “The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.” where she was shown as a saloon singer and con artist. One of her first notable films was entitled “I Love Trouble”. Her net worth was rising steadily.

Throughout the 90s she continued to star in various television shows like “Kindred: The Embraced”, and later in “Melrose Place” as Megan Lewis. During the year 2000, she starred in the horror film “Scream 3”, and around the same time became a part of the ABC drama “Threat Matrix”. One of the longer-running roles that gave her recognition and a significant increase in her net worth was in the CW series “Gossip Girl” – the series went on to run for five years. After “Gossip Girl”, Kelly spent most of the time doing television movies like those from Lifetime.

For her personal life, Rutherford’s first marriage was to the Venezuelan banker Carlos Tarajano in 2001 but it only lasted six months. She then married in 2006 to German businessman Daniel Giersch – they have two children, but during her second pregnancy she filed for a divorce and subsequently became involved in a custody battle. They had joint physical custody of the children from 2009 to 2010, but Rutherford eventually filed a restraining order against Daniel. Two years later, Daniel’s visa was revoked due to questionable circumstances revolving around his business. A few allegations included fraud, drugs and weapons dealing, which led to Daniel’s deportation. Daniel then moved to France, with Rutherford and their children visiting the country from time to time. Kelly then filed for sole custody of the children so that they could remain in the United States which was denied by the judge. The judge stated that 50/50 custody should be maintained and that the children should stay in France with their father. In 2013, through an extensive custody battle, Rutherford filed for bankruptcy as her net worth had significantly decreased at this point. As of today, Kelly has temporary sole custody over the children, though full custody will still be shared with their father in France.
