Kate French The L Word | Interview

Kate played the role of Niki Stevens in the movie.  The movie is about the lives and loves of a group of lesbians and bisexuals in Los Angeles. The characters date, get into committed relationships, consider having families, hook up, break up, question their sexuality, stay in the closet, come out or sleep around.

THE STAR SCOOP: Tell us about your character, Niki Stevens, on The L Word.

KATE FRENCH:  Niki Stevens is an actress that is hired to play Jenny in her movie that she made last season, and from there Jenny and Niki kind of happen into an actor-director romance, or a showmance as we call them [laughs]. She’s young, she’s very inexperienced in relationships and people’s feelings. Niki Stevens is more of an adventurous kind of fun-loving person who is very caught up in that early 20s party atmosphere. Just kind of living life to its fullest. Needless to say, their relationship doesn’t work out last season.

This season is kind of the complications that come from once you’ve ended a relationship and you’re still within that group of friends that your ex is in and all that kind of drama. It’s still very interconnected. She has a way of getting herself into situations that aren’t always the best. She’s never mean-spirited. It’s always in the best intentions. She’s just young. She likes to have a good time. She never misses out on that.

THE STAR SCOOP: What was it like for you to come into such an established show and environment as The L Word?

KATE FRENCH: I was so excited. When I got the call that I was going to be joining The L Word cast, I was more than thrilled. It was a role that I had fallen in love with when I had auditioned. It was probably to this day one of the most amazing moments that I’ve experienced in my career. It was a character that I absolutely loved. When I thought about the cast I was joining, and the acclaimed actresses that I’d be working with, and the fact that it’s also an all-female cast is also extremely intimidating. Where there’s women, there’s a lot of estrogen and a lot of drama can be going on! I was terrified for that more than anything, I think. Once I got there, I was accepted immediately, and everyone treated me like I had been there the whole time. I had a really good experience.

As far as the material, I was ready for it. I knew what the show was, and for me as an actress, I felt like it was a way to really explore and be someone completely different, which is the whole point of acting. For me it was a great experience. I was thrilled about the content. I mean, there was maybe a little more nudity than I thought there would be for my character at least [laughs] but you just gotta go for it. I didn’t think about that because the most important thing was just portraying the character exactly how she would be, and she was somebody who probably would be naked a lot!

THE STAR SCOOP: You’re no stranger to controversially themed shows. Did you worry about being type-cast having done South of Nowhere?

KATE FRENCH : I don’t think so. I thought about that. I mean I look so girly, and in the relationship, I kind of took over. I was definitely more of the boyfriend in my relationship with Jenny, Mia Kirshner’s character. It was funny because I didn’t even know that about me! To see that I kind of wore the pants…I don’t think so. I feel like acting is all about taking risks and taking on characters that you might not normally play. Although I was associated with South of Nowhere, I didn’t play a lesbian in that. Even if I did, I loved representing and being in that kind of relationship. I would never turn down a role if I thought it was important to play again. Some of my best friends are, and I just felt like it was great to be a part of their world, and I learned so much. Relationships are relationships.

THE STAR SCOOP: It is the last season of The L Word. What should fans expect for the final season?

KATEFRENCH  : It’s gonna be interesting. They kind of put a new spin on the last season. I actually don’t know how fans will respond to it. I’m hoping they will enjoy it. It has an interesting premise. It’s definitely gonna be completely different than any of the other five seasons, which I think is a good thing as well. It kind of makes The L Word go out on a very memorable platform. None of us actually really know how it ends. They shot a few different endings and we did a lot of stuff in front of the green screen, so it really has the opportunity to put whatever behind us pretty much.

We had no real idea. I think they did it purposely…they really wanted to keep it very secretive as far as what was going to be the final ending. I actually have no idea. I’m so excited for it to start so I can figure it out as well. This is a very interactive season for fans…it’s like a murder mystery. The fans become extremely involved in figuring out what’s going on. It hasn’t lost its charm…just because the tone of it is kind of a little bit darker this season, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s changed the whole spin on The L Word and what it’s been about the whole time. It should be good.

THE STAR SCOOP: What will you take away from playing Niki?

KATE FRENCH  : I should enjoy things a little bit more. I’m always so focused on getting things done – playing adult, being very responsible. I love having a good time and I definitely do. When I found her character, there were things about her that were really crazy and immature. I enjoyed that about her. While filming and being her, it kind of brought out a side of me that I had kind of let go because I was so focused on just accomplishing things. I was missing out on a lot of things in life that make life so much fun and wonderful. Niki definitely makes wrong decisions but it kind of allowed me in playing her to kind of let go. It was the most fun character I’ve every played. The enjoyment I got out of playing her definitely lended itself to my own life.

THE STAR SCOOP: What is your relationship with Mia Kirshner like in real life?

KATE FRENCH  : Mia and I immediately clicked. The first day my legs were shaking. I thought they were going to have to cut. After we did our first scene together, we just had such a great chemistry together. We hung out quite a bit off-set when we were filming. I still keep in touch with her. She’s doing a book tour right now, so she’s been out of the country. Whenever we’re both in L.A., I try to be in contact with her. We will occasionally grab dinner or something. I think she’s a great person. She’s just accomplishing so many things right now as well outside of the business, which I think is amazing.

I was really fortunate. I felt like because she was my main love interest, I was actually really grateful. We got along. We were both so upset that our relationship was ending. We fought it so badly! I don’t even think the first season we were together, our relationship wasn’t supposed to last that long. But we kind of just got the writers and everyone on board with keeping us together because we loved, loved working together. It was just such a great creative atmosphere. We both loved to improv and keep it fresh. It was really fun for both of us. It was by far the most fun I’ve ever had working with another actor.

THE STAR SCOOP: We read that you’re also an aspiring writer.

KATE FRENCH : Yeah, yes I am. I am working on something that I’ve been working on for the last year. I don’t know what’s going to come of it. My first passion is writing. It’s hard, finding time to really devote with everything going on. It was interesting working with Mia, because at the same time she was finishing her book when we were working together. I just sat with her and picked her brain on the process. Her book of course is a little different. It’s based on research she did in third world countries. It’s completely different because I would love to write a novel. I think I’m a long way from completing it, unfortunately. It’s a goal that I’ve set. I’m actually going to try to take some classes as well because writing a novel is a huge feat. That’s what I’d love to focus on. Hopefully one day…I can’t give an estimate on when…before I die, for sure!

THE STAR SCOOP: Where can fans see you next?

KATE FRENCH : I just finished shooting two episodes of Gossip Girl so that will be fun. I believe it airs in two weeks, the two episodes, back to back. I just did that while I was in New York. I have a small part in a movie called Fired Up, it’s like a cheerleading comedy, coming out I believe in February or March…sometime this spring. I haven’t done a lot since the holidays and everything. I think it’s going to be a good year.

THE STAR SCOOP: What thoughts do you have for your fans?

KATE FRENCH: I appreciate them so much. It’s something that I’ve just recently become a part of – of having fans. I think that it’s something that I would never take for granted. Their devotion and the people that I have met and the fact that they come up and just thank you…the stories of what it means to them and their lives…that to me, will never get tiring.

To have that connection with somebody who you don’t even know through the TV…I grew up watching movies and loving them and watching my favorite stars. So I understand that connection, how important it is to have that. It’s the whole point of fans. I appreciate it so much. The fact that they are so devoted is just amazing to me. I love it so much. It’s very important, and I don’t think I would ever take it for granted. We’re all very blessed to be working in this industry. To be able to have people that admire the people that you play is wonderful. I thank them for that.

THE STAR SCOOP: Why should people tune in this season to The L Word?

KATE FRENCH : This season especially is gonna be very emotional. Even if you’ve never watched The L Word, it’s so representative of life. In this way, everyone is going to connect this season. As we all get older, you come into these friendships and you lose some friendships or friendships just move farther away. Things happen in people’s lives where you have no control. I think this season really pulls on those emotions. It still shows the positive side. It’s not completely depressing like I’m making it sound [laughs].

It also just shows that we’re all in this together and this is life. At the same time, there are these bonds that you find in people all throughout your life that no matter what happens, you will always be tied with them. This season does a really good job of entwining that. I think if you are a fan, you will absolutely love it, because it’s going to pull at all your heart strings. Even if you’ve never watched it before, you will immediately connect with these people because this season gives a very good sum up and look into each one’s lives through the years to bring you in. If you’re not already a fan, definitely tune in to this season. I think it’s going to be one of the better ones…There’s no oil wrestling, [though]!
