The role of Alina Starkov in the 2021 fantasy series Shadow and Bone on Netflix made English actress Jessica Mei Li famous. Her parents, an English mother and a Chinese father who was raised in Hong Kong, welcomed her into the world on August 27, 1995, in Brighton, East Sussex.

Her older brother used to reside in Redhill, Surrey, where she was raised. Li attended Reigate College from 2010 to 2012 before enrolling at the University of Sussex to study French and Spanish.

However, she finally decided against continuing her studies. Li supported children with special needs throughout her more than two years as a teaching assistant in a secondary school.

In addition to part-time enrollment at the Identity School of Acting from 2016 to 2017, Li also enrolled in the National Youth Theatre in 2015.

In the theatrical production All About Eve, which was written and directed by Ivo van Hove and included renowned actors including Gillian Anderson and Lily James, she had her professional stage debut in February 2019 at the Noel Coward Theatre in the role of Claudia Casswell.
