If the question is ever about the first person to upload a video to YouTube, your winning bet is Jawed Karim. Although few people have heard of him, he is an entrepreneur and one of the founders of YouTube. He is the mastermind behind some of the platform’s real-time anti-internet fraud systems. Also an investor, Karim worked with PayPal before teaming up with Steven Chen and Chad Hurley to launch the video-sharing platform. Here is a brief account of his life, including facts about his wife, fortune, and everything you’ve got.

Jawed Karim Biography

Jawed Karim was born in Merseburg, Germany on October 28, 1979. While her mother Christine Karim (professor of biochemistry) is German, her father Naimul Karim (chemist) is Bangladeshi. He was raised alongside a brother, Ilias Karim.

He remained in Germany until 1992 when his family immigrated to Minnesota where he was educated at Saint Paul Central High School. From there he moved to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he studied computer science. Much later, he went to Stanford University where he earned a master’s degree in the field.

The lesser-known YouTube co-founder, Karima worked with PayPal among its first employees while still in college. It was here that he met his future partner, Chad Hurley, involved in the creation of the PayPal logo and Steve Chen.

In 2002, after the purchase of the payment service by eBay, Karim and the two other co-founders decided to create a database.

During a Super Bowl show in 2004, Janet Jackson had a wardrobe malfunction that exposed her breasts. While it was something that caught the world’s attention, Karim tried to get the video of the failed internet crash in 2005. Getting other videos, like the one about the tsunamis and other events worldwide, has also proven to be very difficult.

This is what motivated Karim, then 26 years old, to launch a video sharing platform. So he proposed the idea to his two other friends who accepted and immediately got to work.

Insofar as the idea originated with him, that Jawed Karim wanted more than anything at the time to go to computer school. He therefore elected not to run the new company anymore, as they decided that Hurley would become the CEO, while the CTO office would go to Chen.. For his part, he would still be part of it, even if he would only have smaller stakes.

Saturday, April 23, 2005 at 8:00:27:00 Karim using the user name “Jawed” posted the very first video on YouTube. The video was “Me at the Zoo” and filmed him describing elephants. He was shot by his friend, Yakov Lapitsky.

In 2006, the company was sold to Google for $1.65 billion.

He continued to be involved in other things like photography and writing. He founded Youniversity Ventures in 2008 alongside Keith Rabois and Kevin Hartz. The company seeks to help people with innovative products access mentorship and capital.

What is his net worth?

Jawed Karim has an estimated net worth of $140 million. The programmer made his fortune mainly through the company he contributed to, YouTube. After his takeover by Google, Karim then had 137,443 Google shares, which was worth $64 million, but with the company’s stock steadily rising, his stake now exceeds $140 million.

Meanwhile, Steven Chen had $301 million from his 700,000 shares of Google. Thanks to this, his net worth now stands at $700 million. Chad Hurley, the video-sharing platform’s latest founding member, got $334 million from the sale of the company.

Wife of YouTube co-founder

One who always wanted to be in the background and not in the spotlight, little is known about the YouTube co-founder’s personal life. Nevertheless, he has been linked to British author Kia Abdullah, author of the novels Life, Love and Assimilation (Adlibbed, 2006) and Child’s Play (2009).

However, the two are no longer together as Abdullah is now dating photographer Peter Watson, who has been described as his partner. For his part, we do not know if Jawed Karim has a wife or even a girlfriend.
