On November 2, 2013, at the Washington DC courthouse, Amy and Kathryn decided to marry for the second time so that they could receive certain legal advantages. Unlike the first wedding where they both wore dresses, the couple opted for a very casual look.

About 160 guests and a dozen children attended the wedding. The Honorable Marisa Demeo, Catherine’s friend in college and a judge of the Superior Court of Justice, attended the ceremony.

“To me, marriage is a civil right, it’s a government-approved benefit package,” Amy Hamm’s wife said.

“But being married to someone – or engaged to someone – is a lifetime investment of work and love. Amy and I were married in 1999 and that’s when we made our promises and I’ve truly felt ‘married’ to her ever since. We wouldn’t have had another ceremony if we hadn’t had to do something to get the legal benefits, which, let’s add, are not yet only partial benefits for us, as our home state of Virginia does not recognize our marriage.”

When Equally Wed asked Amy what she loved most about her wife Kat, she replied:

“I love Catherine’s willingness to put her heart on her sleeve. She fights for what she believes in, even when she knows she might be deeply disappointed and hurt. And even then, she never stops believing that she will be able to make a difference. “

Kathryn was thrown the same question and she said;

“I love Amy’s sense of humor, kindness, willpower, playfulness and wisdom. She is a perfect leaf for me. And, I think maybe my favorite thing about her more and more is watching over her relative, our son. It’s a joy to live this side of her! “

“We added a sand ceremony to reflect our commitment as a forever family since our son was too young to remember his adoption ceremony. It was really powerful and, call it mother’s intuition, but I feel like something inside shifted within him as he understood our commitment as a family and his role in it. ci in a new way,” Kathryn said.

In addition to their son, the couple have a Wheaton terrier named Eli.

Like his wife Amy, Kathryn has also been successful in her career. She interned at the Discovery Channel before going full-time. She then began working as a guidance counselor at Maret School, DC, where she also coached the football team. Simultaneously, Hamm studied a master’s degree in social work at the Catholic University of America.
