How to cut valley rafters
Sarah Rodriguez How do you calculate the length of a valley rafter?
To calculate the length of a hip rafter, multiply the unit length by the number of feet in the total run of a common rafter.
How do you frame a roof valley?
How do you figure rafters for cutting?
How are the side cut and plumb cut for hip rafters obtained?
Make the Plumb Cuts
Set the saw for a 45 degree cheek cut and make the cut on one side of the rafter, then flip it over and cut the other side. One cut will have to be made from the top of the rafter and the other from the bottom.

What angle do I cut for a 4 12 pitch?
What angle is a 4 over 12 pitch? Roofs with a pitch of 4/12 are approximately 18.4 degrees, depending on how exact you’d like to be in your measurement.
What is a 4/12 pitch?
A roof that rises 4 inches for every 1 foot or 12 inches of run is said to have a “4 in 12” slope. The slope ratio represents a certain amount of vertical rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run. For example, a “4 in 12” slope can be expressed as the ratio of 4:12. A “6 in 12” slope is expressed as 6:12.
What degree cut is a 6 12 pitch?
What is A 6/12 Roof Pitch? When you are talking about roof pitches, the first number is the number of inches the roof rises every 12 inches. The angle on a 6/12 roof is 26.57 degrees.
What does a 4/12 pitch mean?
Roof slopes are most commonly defined by the rise-over-run ratio. If a roof slope “rises”, say, 4 inches when measured 12 inches along the bottom of a horizontal roof truss, the roof slope is said to be 4:12; i.e., 4 inches of rise per 12 inches (one foot) of run.
What does a 6 12 pitch mean?
The angle, or pitch, of a roof is calculated by the number of inches it rises vertically for every 12 inches it extends horizontally. For example, a roof that rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run has a 6-in-12 pitch.
What roof pitch is 25 degrees?
Roof Slope in Degrees to Standard Roof Pitch Conversion Tables
| Convert Roof Slope from Degrees to Rise-in-Run | |
|---|---|
| Roof Angle in Degrees | Roof Slope as Rise-in-Run (X-in-12) |
| 25° | 5.596 in 12 |
| 26° | 5.853 in 12 |
| 27° | 6.114 in 12 |
How do you cut a rafter for a 4 12 pitch?
Which is better rafters or trusses?
Once in place, rafters use up more wood, so they weigh more, but trusses are stronger because they are more efficient and have the capacity to produce maximum strength using fewer materials in the end.
What size rafters do I need for a 12 foot span?

What angle do you cut roof rafters?
Step 1: MARK AND CUT THE FIRST RAFTER ENDS
The ridge end of the rafter, and often the eve end, will need to be cut to the angle of the roof slope. The roof on this shed is a 4 in 12 slope which makes it a 18 and one half degree angle on the board ends. A rafter or speed square will have marks for both of these angles.
What is the maximum span for a 2×6 Rafter?
How Far Can a 2×6 Rafter Span? A 2×6 rafter can span 14 feet 8 inches when spaced 16 inches apart with No. 1-grade southern pine lumber on a roof with a 3/12 slope or less with a maximum live load of 20 pounds per square foot and a deceased load of 15 psf.
What is the most common roof pitch angle?
The most commonly used roof pitches fall in a range between 4/12 and 9/12. Pitches lower than 4/12 have a slight angle, and they are defined as low-slope roofs. Pitches of less than 2/12 are considered flat roofs, even though they may be very slightly angled.
