Little is known about Ernie’s early life and growing up. Nevertheless, after high school matriculation, Ernie enrolled at Northeastern University, from which he eventually graduated, following which Ernie found his first job at the radio station 98.5/WROR in Boston, reading news. Then in 1976 he was hired as an anchor at WPRI-TV in Providence, Rhode Island. Just two years, later, Ernie got the job at WABC-TV in New York, as anchor of the 11:00 pm Eyewitness News broadcast – he was teamed with Rose Ann Scamadella for the show until 1983, and then moved to 5:00 pm with Kaity Tong as his co-anchor, after he replaced Stomr Field. Then in 1989 he left the station and joined WCBS to anchor 5:00 pm, 6:00pm and 11:00 pm news, replacing several newscasters. After four years of successful work at WCBS, he left the channel and joined short-lived cable channel NewsTalk Television. Unfortunately, the cable network closed and as a result, Ernie was jobless.

Fortunately that didn’t last long, as he found a job as a host of a gardening show on Lifetime, entitled “Our Home”. Three years later, Ernie’s net worth increased thanks to a job at WWOR-TV, but he returned to WCBS in 2001, only to leave again in 2005 to sign a $10 million contract over five years with WNYW-TV; he was established at Fox 5 and partnered with Dari Alexander for the 5:00 pm, and 10:00 pm newscasts. Ernie was stripped down from the 10:00 pm newscasts in 2012, and since then has only served as anchorman for the 5:00 pm. bulletin.

Aside from studio newscasting, Ernie traveled the globe to report on the news, and as a result, he covered the World Trade Center attacks, then met Fidel Castro during his visit to Cuba for the 45th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. Furthermore, he was there when Cardinal John Joseph O’Connor took a trip to El Salvador and Nicaragua, and reported live from London about the tragic event of Princess Diana’s death. That is not the end of his endeavors, Ernie has also reported about the death of John F. Kennedy Jr,, being one of many newscasters at the site of the plane crash near Cape Cod. For this endeavor, Ernie received an Emmy Award- nomination.

Ernie’s net worth increased from his work as an author; his book “Twixt: Teens Yesterday and Today”, was published in 1983, and he has also been a regular contributor to Family Circle.
Ernie also owned a radio station, WJKE, which he sold to Empire Broadcasting Corporation for $1.2 million, which also increased his wealth.

Thanks to his successful career, Ernie has received around 30 Emmy Award- nominations and several other awards, including the Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in writing.

However, aside from good things, Ernie had several gaffes while live, which includes saying “It takes a tough man to make a tender forecast, Nick. Keep fucking that chicken”, to meteorologist, Nick Gregory.

Regarding his personal life, Ernie is married to Kelly, and has two children with her, but further details about his marriage remain unknown.
