Eddy Grant Resource Centre

As part of the 170th-anniversary celebration of the purchase of Plaisance by freed slaves, the Eddy Grant Resource Centre, housing the community’s first library was launched on June 29, 2012, in the bottom flat of the Plaisance/Sparendaam Friendly Society Hall.

The commissioning of the $5 million resource center is part of the list of activities planned for the next two months by the Plaisance/Sparendaam and Goedverwagting Development Association to mark the milestone of the village.

The center comprises a library, office, living quarters, storeroom, and washroom facilities and has created employment for two young women who will serve as librarians.

Residents of the community will benefit from the free use of the 800 books that have been donated along with chairs, printers, computers, and tablets.

The Ministry of Home Affairs’ Inter-American Bank-funded Citizen Security Programme donated all of the equipment to the facility, except the books, as part of its Rapid Impact Project, through which it advances community development.

Coordinator of the project, Beryl Haynes, said things have changed for the community which has been without a library for over 30 years. Through the generous contributions of villagers, Eddy Grant, and the Plaisance New York Group, she added, the creation of the Resource Centre was successful.

She said that the building was named after the international Guyanese recording artist in recognition of his ambassadorial activity for his country Guyana in addition to his many contributions to the community as a whole over the past years.

Guess speaker at the event, Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green, said programs should be put in place to connect young people with the present. Stating that the young generation was not being properly informed about history, he said, “I encourage persons here today to pass on the knowledge about the history of their village and country to the young generation.”

Eddy Grant, who was absent from the ceremony, was represented by his wife, Ann Grant, who told the gathering after the cutting of the ribbon that she hoped that the facility will help many eager minds to change the world for the better.

As persons awaited the arrival of Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee, the Tina Insanally Bosco Steel Orchestra provided lively steel pan music. Rohee, who was invited to tour the facility on arrival, said it would serve the purpose of bringing people together.

He said, “one of the social responsibilities of persons is to give back to the community while encouraging them to take advantage of what the center has to offer.” (Mandy Thompson)

Eddy Grant Career | Eddy Grant Electric Avenue

In 1965, Grant formed the Equals, playing guitar and singing background vocals, and the band had two hit albums and a minor hit with the single “I Get So Excited” before having a number one hit in 1968 with his song “Baby Come Back”.

The tune also topped the UK Singles Chart in 1994, when covered by Pato Banton featuring Robin and Ali Campbell of the reggae group UB40. The Equals had five further top 40 hits in the UK up to the end of 1970.

The Baby Come Back album featured a song by Grant titled, “Police on My Back” which was recorded by the Clash for their 1980 album Sandinista!. Willie Nile released his version of “Police on My Back” on his Streets of New York CD.

The Equals’ song “Green Light” co-written by Grant from their 1968 album Supreme, was recorded by the Detroit Cobras, for their 2007 album, Tied & True.

In this period he also worked as a songwriter and producer for other artists, including the Pyramids (producing their debut single “Train Tour to Rainbow City”) and Prince Buster, for whom he wrote “Rough Rider”, and started the Torpedo record label, releasing British-made reggae singles.

On 1 January 1971, Grant suffered a heart attack and collapsed lung, leading to his departure from the Equals to concentrate on production, opening his own Coach House Studios in the grounds of his Stamford Hill home in 1972, and starting Ice Records in 1974, initially distributed by Pye Records and later by Virgin Records.

He produced the Pioneers’ 1976 album Feel the Rhythm, as well as early recordings by his younger brother Rudy, working under the name the Mexicano. During this time he also branched out of music, learning to tap dance, and subsequently trying his hand at acting at the behest of fellow Guyanese immigrant, actor Norman Beaton.

A self-titled solo album released in 1975 made little impact, as did the proto-soca Message Man, completed and released in 1977, on which Grant played all the instruments himself.

His breakthrough as a solo artist came two years later with the album Walking on Sunshine, which spawned the UK top 20 hits “Living on the Frontline”. He returned to the charts in 1980 with the top 10 hits “Do You Feel My Love”, the opening track of Can’t Get Enough, the 1981 album giving him his first entry in the UK Albums Chart.

The album included two further hit singles, “Can’t Get Enough of You” and “I Love You, Yes I Love You”. Grant became based in Barbados from 1982 (where he opened his Blue Wave Studios), the same year releasing his most successful album, Killer on the Rampage, which included his two biggest solo hits, “I Don’t Wanna Dance”, which spent three weeks at number one in the UK as well as selling well internationally, and “Electric Avenue”, which reached no. 2 in both the UK and the US.

Eddy Grant Romancing The Stone

He also began producing and promoting local artists such as David Rudder, Mighty Gabby, Tamu Hibbert, and Grynner. A lean period followed; his 1984 theme song for Romancing the Stone was cut from the film and stalled outside the UK top 50 when released as a single, although it fared better in the US. His albums Going for Broke (1984), Born Tuff (1987), and File Under Rock (1988) failed to chart and produced no further hit singles.

He returned to the charts in 1988 with the anti-apartheid single “Gimme Hope Jo’anna”, a no. 7 hit in the UK. The song was banned by the South African government.

In the late 1980s, he pursued other business interests including music publishing, and a nightclub, and built up the success of his Blue Wave studio, which was used by the Rolling Stones, Sting, Cliff Richard, and Elvis Costello.

He continued releasing albums in the 1990s, including Barefoot Soldier (1990), Paintings of the Soul (1992), Soca Baptism (1993), and Hearts and Diamonds (1999).

In 1994 he introduced a new genre, ringbang, at the Barbados Crop Over festival. Grant said of ringbang: “What ringbang seeks to do is envelop all the rhythms that have originated from Africa so that they become one, defying all geographical boundaries.” In 2000 he organized the Ringbang Celebration festival in Tobago,.

In 2001, a remix of Electric Avenue reached no. 5 in the UK and an attendant Greatest Hits album reached no. 3 in that country. In 2006, he released the album Reparation.

In 2008, Grant performed at Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday concert, and also played several dates in the UK, including the Glastonbury Festival. In 2016, it was announced that Grant would receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the government of Guyana.

Eddy Grant President Donald Trump

On Tuesday, September 1, 2020, Twitter removed a video tweeted by President Donald Trump following a copyright complaint from musician Eddy Grant, whose hit 1980s song “Electric Avenue” was featured in the clip.

A company spokesperson confirmed to CNN that the video had been taken down as a result of its copyright policy. Brian Caplan, an attorney for Grant, told CNN on Tuesday evening that “the removal of the video does not diminish the damages that have been sustained by reason of the two copyright infringements at issue. The tweet was sent to millions of President Trump’s Twitter account followers and then retweeted a significant amount of times.” “Neither the President nor his reelection campaign team gave any defense to their wrongful conduct,” Caplan said. Grant had filed a lawsuit against Trump’s campaign earlier Tuesday arguing it has “continued to willfully and wrongfully infringe Plaintiffs’ copyrights.” The video, which was tweeted by the President the previous month, featured an animated train with his campaign logo speeding through a town while Biden follows along slowly in a railroad handcar. Grant’s song plays throughout the duration of the video, which as of Tuesday afternoon has more than 13 million views. The video ends with letters spelling out “Biden Train” falling off the screen.

close dialog.

One day after the video was posted, another attorney for Grant, Wallace E.J. Collins, issued a cease and desist letter to the Trump campaign explaining that Grant is the “sole and exclusive rightful copyright owner of the musical composition,” according to a news release on Grant’s website. In the letter, Collins wrote, “as a result of your wrongful unauthorized Infringing Use in connection with your controversial political campaign, substantial damage and irreparable harm has occurred and will continue to occur to my client and his reputation as an artist when affiliated in any way with your campaign.” Collins added that the use of Grant’s music indicates “a fundamental misunderstanding of the very meaning of the underlying work.” Grant said in a statement following the cease and desist letter “I call upon such arbiter, as is responsible for this sordid abuse, to come forward like a man and let’s sort this thing out, in the way that America demands when such issues are to be sorted, especially when they are wrong.” “Mr. Trump, I am calling on you. You are the final arbiter and I await the word from you.” The Trump campaign has repeatedly garnered warnings and legal action from a slate of different musical artists for using their work, including Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, and criticism from the family of the late Tom Petty.
