Eddie Levert spent some time of his childhood in Alabama, and later in Canton, Ohio, where he moved with his family at the age of six. His family went to church very often, and there he became interested in music, so he joined the church choir. Parallel with that, he also sang in school plays, as well as on a gospel radio show. Eddie attended McKinley High School, and while he was there, his career began.

Eddie’s career on the American music scene really began when he and his friends Bill Isles, Walter Williams, Bobby Massey and William Powel formed the band, initially called The Triumphs and then The Mascots, before officially becoming the O’ Jays. Their first album came out in 1965, entitled “Comin’ Through”, which unfortunately failed on every major chart in the US. Nevertheless, they continued to produce music, and made a breakthrough with their seventh studio album, entitled “Back Stabbers”, released in 1972, which reached No. 10 on the US Billboard 200 and topped the US R&B chart, and it also achieved gold status, which increased Eddie’s net worth by a large margin, as well as his popularity.

During the 1970s, the band continued successfully, releasing albums such as “Ship Ahoy” (1973), “Survival” (1975), “Family Reunion: (1975), “Message In The Music” (1976), “So Full Of Love” (1978), and “Identify Yourself” (1979), all of which achieved platinum status, increasing the overall size of Eddie’s net worth further.

However, after the 1970s, the group’s popularity began to decline, although they are still active, and have now released a total of 29 studio albums. Since the 1980s, they have only had one album “Emotionally Yours” (1991), which achieved gold status. Albums such as “When Will I See You Again” (1983), “Love Fever” (1985), and “Imagination” (2004), failed to enter the mark of top 100 albums on the US Billboard 200 chart.

Their latest release was “Christmas With The O’ Jays” (2010), which reached no. 45 on the US R&B chart, and contributed somewhat to his net worth.

Thanks to his successful career, Eddie has received several prestigious awards and recognitions, including induction into the BET Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, and he and the other members of the band were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004 and in The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame the following year.

If to talk about his personal life, Eddie Levert is married to Raquel Capelton, with whom he has a daughter. He is also the father of three sons – Eddie Jr., Sean (died in 2008), and Gerald (died in 2006), all of them known for their activities in the music industry. Eddie Jr. is the CEO of Levert Entertainment. Eddie Sr’s current residence is in Las Vegas, Nevada.
