Earnie Shavers Record

Inside the game of boxing, he is generally viewed as the hardest puncher ever. Earnie completed his profession in 1995 with a record of 74 successes (68 by knockout, 23 inside the first cycle), 14 misfortunes, and 1 draw.

Earnie Shavers Boxrec

Earnie started boxing at the fairly late age of 22. Prior to turning professional, he had a short but famous amateur career, winning the 1969 National AAU heavyweight title. Prior to this, he started to rise through the ranks of the heavyweight division after he hired a Cleveland-based promoter and ex-con named Don King to be his manager.

Moreover, his wins included a novice Jimmy Young who would later become a top contender. Nonetheless, he came to public prominence with a first-round KO of one-time WBA heavyweight champion Jimmy Ellis.

However, his progress was halted when he was KO’d in the first round by Jerry Quarry which was followed by another loss to a journeyman Bob Stallings. Furthermore, Earnie then had a thunderous match with hard-hitting Ron Lyle but was stopped after 6 brutal rounds. Most noteworthy, he knocked out hard hitter Howard King. In addition, he beat powerful prospect Roy Williams in a brutal back and forward battle in which Earnie was nearly knocked out.

Earnie Shavers vs Muhammad Ali

On September 29, 1977, Earnie fought with Muhammad Ali in a fifteen-round boxing match. Nevertheless, the fight went full distance with Ali emerging the winner through a unanimous decision. Most notably, Ali was badly hurt in the second round. However, by pretending to be even more hurt than he was, he deceived Earnie into thinking he was play-acting. Citing this, Earnie fails to go for a knockout.

Ali won favor with the judges by finishing each round strongly. Earnie, however, put up a strong performance in the 13th and 14th rounds. Prior to this, Ali finished the 15th round very strongly nearly knocking down him towards the end of the fight. Citing this, many experts regard Ali’s performance in the Earnie fight to be one of the finest in his boxing career.

Earnie Shavers vs Mike Tyson

Two aging destroyers, 35-year-old Tyson and 37-year-old Earnie are matched up on the undercard of Holmes and Cooney. When the match starts, Tyson strikes first hence flooring Earnie twice in the first round.

Prior to this, he pummels a defenseless Earnie against the ropes but is unable to finish him. Moreover, he continues to dominate over the next two rounds, and by the end of the third Earnie is badly cut over the left eye.

However, Earnie turns the tide with a devastating right which sends Mike to the canvas in the 4th. Furthermore, he pursues him to the ropes and lands a left which nearly sends him through the ropes. Citing this, Tyson barely survives the round.

Nevertheless, having punched himself out, he tires in the 5th while Tyson clears his head. Afterward, Mike sends Earnie to the canvas for the third time in the fight with a right uppercut in round 6. He pummels a defenseless Earnie along the ropes, prompting the referee to step in and stop the fight. Therefore, Tyson wins the TKO 6.

Earnie Shavers Vs George Foreman

George and Earnie never engaged in a match.

However, George was a ferocious puncher. Also, he had a better jab than Earnie and was a better boxer out of the two. He trained and spared against the most frightening heavyweight boxing fighter in the history of the sport as well which was Sonny Liston. Most notably, George has admitted in a number of interviews that Sonny Liston was the only fighter that he was truly scared of. However, he knew that Sonny liked him and gave him advice all the time.

He actually taught him, George, how to jab correctly. And also how to punch properly. Citing this, he was shocked at how good Liston was good at slipping punches. Moreover, he was so impressed with Liston’s fear of his opponents that copied his mannerisms into the ring. And his opponents were scared of him.

Another reason why it is possible that the two never fought was that George had a bad experience with Don king’s promotion of one or more of his fights. Prior to this, he wanted nothing more to do with him. Therefore, this could have been another reason why the fight between the two never took place.

I think George Foreman would have won this if they ever did get this heavyweight championship fight going. Earnie was a very one-dimensional type of fighter. He relied on his big right hand to end fights. And he did so on many occasions. So you can’t take that away from him.
