Derek Jeter grew up in Kalmazoo, Michigan, attending Kalamazoo High School where he played basketball and ran, but was outstanding at baseball. As a child, Jeter had the strict upbringing – his mother Dorothy taught Derek never to use the word “can’t”, and encouraged him to set goals every year. Jeter spent his summers with his grandparents in New Jersey, and there they would go to see many a New York Yankees game together, which is when Derek became a passionate fan of the team, and watching now-retired MLB player Dave Winfield inspired him with a resolve to pursue a career in the sport. Jeter would thus go on to play baseball in high school, winning several honours for his outstanding performance – including an All-State honourable mention that set Jeter apart as one of the most successful and talented young athletes in Michigan. Kalamazoo Central High School, has since renamed his old haunt, the high school’s baseball field, in Jeter’s honour.

After high school, Derek Jeter went on to play in the minor baseball leagues. In four years Jeter  advanced from single-A to triple-A ranked teams, and in 1995 played a few games for the Yankees as shortstop for his old flame. That very first day of the 1996 season, Jeter hit his first MLB home run – setting him up for an amazing year, in which Jeter ended up claiming both the Rookie of the Year award, and won the World Series of 1996 with the team. Eventually he would finish his career sixth on the all-time batters list, and became know as the most consistently performing player in the MLB.

His net worth was certainly rising consistently too – in 2001, Derek Jeter was approached with the offer for a ten-year contract valued at a staggering $189 million to stay with the Yankees. In the years to follow, Jeter would be selected as an All-Star  thirteen times, and he is still the only player to have ever won both the All-Star Game MVP award and the World Series MVP award in one season.

Derek Jeter is hailed as the most important contributor to the New York Yankees’ late 1990s and early 2000s successes, and he is one of the sport’s leading figures overall, including five Gold Glove Awards and five Silver Slugger Awards. Jeter’s net worth has been built almost entirely upon his incredible career in Major League Baseball (MLB).  He retired after his twentieth season in the MLB.

Derek has several business interests, including a publishing house, web site, and video production company.

In his personal life, Derek Jeter married model Hannah Davis in July 2016. Previously he was often the centre of attention because of well-publicised associations with several ladies, including  with singer Mariah Carey, model Vida Guerra, former Miss Universe  Lara Dutta, singer Joy Enriquez, television personality Vanessa Minnillo, and the actresses Jessica Biel, Jordana Brewster and Minka Kelly.

Derek is also a noted philanthropist, particularly concerned with anti-drug activities, and supporting less well-off children in education.
