As live music concerts in public spaces were to be stopped in 2021 due to the coronavirus epidemic, David Sanborn adjusted to the situation by holding a number of master lessons via Zoom.

Additionally, he started online performances of the “Sanborn Sessions,” which featured well-known performers like Michael McDonald, Marcus Miller, Christian McBride, and Sting.

Live performances and interviews were conducted during these sessions from his Westchester, New York, home.

The alto saxophone of choice for Sanborn is a Selmer Mark VI. He had a sponsorship agreement with Yamaha in the early 1980s and used their saxophones on the albums “As We Speak” and “Backstreet.” In 1981, he was spotted performing on a Yamaha saxophone at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Sanborn reportedly stated his love for Selmer Mark VI alto saxophones with serial numbers ranging from 140,000 to 150,000, all produced in 1967, in an interview that appeared in the jazz journal DownBeat in April 1988.

Sanborn started using mouthpieces made by Bobby Dukoff in the late 1970s. He is now using an Aaron Drake-designed mouthpiece.
