Dale Murphy Hall Of Fame

Murphy became Hall of Fame eligible during the steroid-enhanced home run derby we know as the 1990s, but a bit before baseball’s dirty little secret came to light. It was a perfect storm for one of the most productive and dominant players of the previous decade to get the shaft.

The Braves legend stayed on the Hall ballot for his entire 15 years of eligibility, peaking at 23 percent of the vote in the year 2000 and sinking to 11.5 percent in 2009.

Murphy secured just 18.9 percent of the vote on his final ballot in the year 2013, relegating his last shot at the Hall to the veteran’s committee. In his first year of eligibility there, the 16-member Modern Baseball Era Committee selected Jack Morris and Allan Trammell for the 2018 Hall of Fame class, passing up Murphy. He can, however, appear on the veterans’ ballot again in two years.

Dale Murphy Baseball Card

Murphy is one of those players who has the career stats and the baseball card history of a great player, but he has not been honored by Cooperstown yet.

Some noteworthy Dale cards that didn’t make the top ten, but should be considered in a comprehensive collection, include his appearance in Kellogg’s 3-D Super Stars set from 1983, his mini-card variations from 2014 Topps Allen and Ginter, and his unique photo used in 2015 Topps Stadium Club.

Murphy also regularly appears in high-end products like Topps Triple Threads and Panini National Treasures, giving collectors a chance to own limited-run signature cards and autographed jersey relics. Generally quite affordable, the following lists highlight a wide mix of Dale Murphy cards that are also noteworthy for collectors.

Dale Murphy Braves

Murphy was picked by the Atlanta Braves in the first round of the year 1974 Major League Draft. Throughout the following couple of years, he served through the Braves’ small-time framework and made his significant group debut in the year 1976.

In spite of the fact that he started his profession as a catcher, he spent a brief timeframe at a respectable starting point lastly wound up in the outfield. Citing this, he became the youngest player in history to win back-to-back MVP awards (1982 and 1983).

Previously, he was named to the National League All-Star team seven times, earned four Silver Slugger awards and five Gold Gloves. During his 1983 MVP season, however, he became the only player in history to compile a .300+ batting average, 30+ home runs, 120+ runs batted in, 130+ runs scored, 90+ bases on balls, and 30+ stolen bases in one season.

Dale Murphy Phillies

During his 15th season with the Braves, Murphy was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies on 3 August 1990. Murphy’s time with the Phillies was mostly uneventful. A degenerative, arthritic condition in his left knee limited Murphy to only 18 games in the year 1992 season with the Phillies, although he did hit two home runs in that time to bring his career total to 398.

Dale was released by the Phillies at the end of the year 1993 Spring Training and, on the same day, signed a Minor League contract with the Colorado Rockies for their inaugural season. He was used mostly as a pinch hitter.

Dale Murphy Baseball

Murphy is the Most Valuable Player in U.S. baseball’s National League two years running (1982, 1983), the youngest of only five players to ever accomplish this feat. And the best is yet to come. That seems to be the consensus, at least, of those who know 29-year-old Murphy best—his teammates, his family, his friends.

Sports Illustrated, in a 4 July 1983 cover story, said, “Here’s a guy who doesn’t drink, smoke, chew or cuss. Here’s a guy who has time for everyone, a guy who’s slow to anger and eager to please, a guy whose agent’s name is Church. His favorite movie is Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life. He’s a wonderful ballplayer.”

Dale Murphy Rockies

After going 0-for-3 with a strikeout in the Rockies’ 8-0 a road loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on 21 May 1993, a rare start and, even more rare, only the fourth time all season he was in a game from the first pitch to the final out, he did not play in the next 4 games.

On the morning of 27 May 1993, while the Rockies were in Houston to begin a series with the Astros, he suddenly reported his retirement from baseball at age 37. Dale explained the Rockies were needing to make a 25-man roster move as well as informed him ahead of time he was going to be released.

The team gave him the chance to retire instead of being released, which he did. He cited “many reasons” for retiring instead of trying to catch on with another team but ultimately knew his performance had degraded due to injuries.

Murphy finished at 398 career home runs, failing to homer for the Rockies in 49 plate appearances as well as reach the 400-homer milestone. At the time of his retirement, he was 27th on the all-time home run list as well as 4th among active players, two behind Andre Dawson of the Boston Red Sox.

Dale Murphy Jersey

Murphy jersey number (“3”) was retired by the Atlanta Braves on 13 June 1994, in his honor as opposed to that of even Babe Ruth, who wore Boston Braves number 3 during the partial season with which his career concluded. Murphy was inducted into both the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in the year 1997.

Dale Murphy Contract

All-star centerfielder Dale Murphy signed a one-year contract Friday with the Atlanta Braves, reportedly for $400,000. Braves’ officials refused to discuss the terms of the contract for the year 1981 season.

However, it had been reported earlier that Murphy would receive $400,000, the largest single-year agreement in club history. Most Importantly, he signs an eight-million-dollar, five-year contract to play for a top baseball team, with a $100,000 bonus for making MVP.

Dale Murphy Restaurant

Murphy opens a new restaurant which is located in the Cobb Galleria Centre. Therefore, he became the perfect spot for a pre-game bite, a post-game meal, or lunch and dinner any day of the week.

At Murph’s, Braves fans can enjoy good-to-the-bone jumbo chicken wings, juicy half-pound burgers, specialty salads, and sandwiches as well as a tantalizing array of appetizers.

“We want this to be a place where sports fans of all ages can spend time together while making great memories.” Most importantly, he is thrilled to open the new chapter of his life in Atlanta. This is because this city gave him the best years of his career.
