Yanni drummer featured at the workshop

LANCASTER – Percussion students in the Lancaster school system Friday got to hear what life as a professional musician is like, as Yanni drummer Charlie Adams performed and answered questions for them during a drumming workshop. Adams is the guest drummer for the annual Lancaster High School percussion ensemble, which will be held 8 p.m. Saturday at the school auditorium at 1312 Granville Pike. He was also scheduled to play with the ensemble for the Friday performance.

Adams has been with Yanni for more than 30 years and lists Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin as a student. Adams seemed to hold the students’ attention as he played along to several Yanni tunes that were playing on a video screen. He then dazzled the students with a drum solo that went on for about 15 minutes. He also fielded numerous questions, like how to deal with mistakes while playing.

If you make a mistake, just move on, Adams said. After the show, then you may want to figure out how to fix it. But you try not to let it bother you. Another student asked him what he thought of electronic drum kits. I like them because you can play late at night without bothering anyone, Adams said. When I play with Yanni, I use a combination of regular drums and electronic drums. Technology is not going to go away, so I decided to embrace it.

He also said being a professional musician is not always glamorous. While he said he loves playing onstage, traveling can be difficult. But I love to play, Adams said. I’ve got to play drums my whole life. I don’t sell shoes and I don’t sell insurance. I get to do what I love to do. I am a lucky man. He also spoke of his influences, which include Buddy Rich, the Beatles, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin among others.
