Professional career

Dallas Cowboys

Baldinger was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys on April 30, 1982, following the 1982 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he appeared in four of nine games, mostly on special teams. In 1983, he saw action as a backup center and guard.

In 1984, he started two games at right tackle to replace an injured Phil Pozderac and two games at right guard to replace an injured Kurt Petersen. In the third preseason game against the Chicago Bears in 1985, he injured his right knee and was placed on the injured reserve list.

In 1986, he was a backup center who also filled in as a third tight end in short-yardage situations. He was placed on the injured reserve list on September 2, 1987, due to a left knee injury suffered in a preseason game.

He was added to the regular-season roster on October 24. In six of the final eight games, he was declared inactive. Baldinger was not re-signed at the end of the season. He played every offensive line position and a few snaps at tight end during his time with the Cowboys.

Indianapolis Colts

On July 19, 1988, he was signed as a free agent by the Indianapolis Colts to provide depth in the event of guard Ron Solt’s lengthy contract holdout.  He was the offensive line’s lightest member.

He appeared in 16 games and started three of them at right tackle. Against the Green Bay Packers, he caught his first career pass (37 yards) from a tackle-eligible position. He played in all 16 games in 1989.

He started the season opener at right tackle in place of Kevin Call and two games at left tackle in place of Chris Hinton, who was injured. In short-yardage situations, he was also used as a tackle-eligible player.

For the first eight games of the 1990 season, he was named the starting right guard. He was moved to right tackle Call’s spot in the second half of the season after he injured his left shoulder in the eighth game against the New York Giants.

In 1991, he started 13 games at center in place of Ray Donaldson, who was sidelined for the season after breaking his leg against the Los Angeles Raiders.
