Brad Falchuk’s career in television was aided by his pursuit of a master’s degree in screenwriting from the AFI Conservatory. He started off as a writer for Veritas: The Quest (2001), Earth: Final Conflict (2001–2002), and Mutant X (2001).

He met Ryan Murphy when he was hired to work on the first season of Nip/Tuck later in 2003.

Falchuk and Murphy grew close, and as a result, a television pilot called Pretty/Handsome about a transgender gynecologist was produced. Despite the pilot being purchased by FX in 2008, the series was not picked up.

Falchuk and Murphy were looking for their next project as Nip/Tuck was nearing an end when they decided to work on a more lighthearted topic.

They offered a one-hour comedy about a glee club to the Fox Broadcasting Company alongside Ian Brennan, who had written a script about high school show choirs.

Their proposal was accepted, and Glee debuted in 2009. For Best Comedy Series and Best New Series, Falchuk, Murphy, and Brennan received two Writers Guild of America Award nominations.
