Bobby Wilson Jackie Wilson

He never knew his father — never even knew that “Mr. Excitement,” the great Jackie Wilson, was his father.

Ironically, Bobby Brooks was simply impersonating Jackie Wilson in a “Legends in Concert” show when someone suggested he perform a tribute to Jackie Wilson because he looked, acted and sang remarkably like the late star.

And why not? Turns out he really was Wilson’s son. He was just a baby when his young mother gave him up for adoption, and he never knew who his father was. But through various acts of fate, he finally met some of Jackie Wilson’s family members. A DNA test eventually proved his biological roots, and he was welcomed into the rest of the Wilson clan with open arms.On Saturday, Bobby Brooks Wilson, along with other well-known performers, will be featured in Jerry Blavat’s annual show, this time titled “Disco, Soul and Doo Wop,” in Verizon Hall at 8 p.m.

“As a young boy I had lots of illnesses and was in and out of the hospital many times,” Wilson remembers. “But I was raised in a Christian home by a wonderful mother who lived to be 96 years old. But she was strictly into country-western and gospel music, so I never listened to Jackie Wilson’s music or even heard of him.”

But once he did and was able to acknowledge he truly sounded like his father, his career took off. He has emerged as a global entertainer, with his own shows including “Jackie Wilson, The Legacy Continues,” “Bobby Brooks Wilson, The Motown Years” and more. He now stars in clubs, theaters, casinos and cruise ships around the world.

“When I get to Philly I’ll be singing lots of my dad’s hits, including ‘Your Love Has Lifted Me Higher,’ ‘Lonely Teardrops’ and others. During the performance I am not really doing an impersonation. I am Bobby, but everybody who sees me says I remind them so much of him it’s uncanny — and hard to escape.

“If you see my father, if you hear my father during my performance, good,” he says. “But when I perform, I just try to be the best me I can be.”

Wilson continues to record his music to the delight of fans around the world. His latest releases include “I Can’t Love You Anymore” and “I Get the Sweetest Feeling.” Currently recording a new CD, he hopes there will be many more to come.

“Looking back, I’m glad I got a good solid foundation from my mom growing up,” he says. “I don’t know why I was selected to carry the torch. I guess God just wanted it that way. Jackie had a light that was incomparable to any other star. I meet his fans every day, and some of them break down and cry, even today, because he’s no longer here with us. He had something special and I hope I can bring that to fans today.”
