Bob Huggins Career

His passion for the game drove Huggins to become a coach where he began as a graduate assistant at West Virginia under Gardner back in 1977. He then spent two years as an assistant to Eldon Miller at Ohio State University. Bob began his head coachwork at an early age, 27.

He accepted the position of head coach at Walsh University in 1980. Huggins was able to compile a 71-26 record in three seasons at Walsh. He was able to win twice earning NAIA District 22 Coach of the Year honors. In the 1982-1983 season, Bob directed the Walsh team to a perfect 30-0 regular-season mark and an eventual 34-1 mark.

After serving as an assistant at the University of Central Florida for the 1983–84 season, Huggins was named head coach at the University of Akron. While at the University of Akron, Bob compiled a 97-46 record and reached post-season play in three of his five seasons. His wins included an NCAA bid during the 1985-1986 season.

The University of Cincinnati had a preceding history but had unfortunately fallen on hard times. The once-proud program that had been to 5 consecutive Final Fours from 1959 to 1963—including a pair of national championships in 1961 and 1962—had not been to the NCAA tournament since 1977 when Huggins arrived in 1989 and had only made an NIT appearance in that time. They had also had only one winning conference record in the previous 12 years.

After being relegated to the NIT his first two years, Huggins would take the Bearcats to the Final Four in his third season—the first of 14 straight NCAA tournament appearances. Huggins compiled a 399–127 record (.759) in his 16 years at Cincinnati, making him the winningest coach in terms of victories and percentage in the school’s basketball history. His creative tactics led the University of Cincinnati to ten conference regular-season titles. Huggins also led the team to eight league tournament titles.

The Bear-cats appeared in post-season play in each of Huggins’ 16 seasons. Besides the aforementioned Final Four appearance in 1992, they advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament two other times, in 1993 and 1996.

Bob Huggins Dui

Bob Huggins’ fate was sealed as soon as Nancy Zimpher saw the black and white images of her drunken basketball coach stumbling through a field sobriety test. Not long after that, the winningest basketball coach at the University of Cincinnati found out the hard way that UC’s new president – and its first female chief – had bigger basketballs than he did.

Huggins’ arrest for DUI on June 8, 2004 – and the release of the cruiser cam video three days later – marked the beginning of the end of a remarkable chapter in UC and Cincinnati sports history. Huggins appeared sincerely contrite and even shed tears at a news conference after the video came out. It was a far cry from Huggins’ typical demeanor on the court – screaming at his players, cussing at refs.

Bob Huggins House

In past news, Bob was complaining after his CCTV camera captured a person urinating on the sidewalls of his home. He twitted saying that despite the fact that he had a gate it was still of no use since the man in the photo got in and released himself there.

Bob Huggins Heart Attack

West Virginia’s Bob Huggins fell to his knees in pain late in the first half against Texas on Monday night. The 63-year-old coach grabbed his chest and took a minute to regain his composure while surrounded by his team. Huggins eventually got up and finished out the game, presiding over a 77-62 win for the Mountaineers.

Now we know the issue: Huggins’ defibrillator went off. The coach said he felt lightheaded and decided to finish out the game after “talking to a couple of people” during halftime.

Huggins said this is the second time his defibrillator has gone off. He suffered a heart attack in 2002. We’ll update this story as it develops.
