The creators of the upcoming film Amsterdam released its trailer in early July 2022, rightly sending expectant fans into a frenzy. The period film is set in the early 20th century, as countries ramped up their espionage and counterintelligence efforts, hoping to avoid or predict another war.

In Amsterdam, the first world war unites a female nurse, a black lawyer, and a white doctor – quite an unlikely trio in the 1930s. “We formed a pact and we swore to protect each other – no matter what,” the doctor, played by Christian Bale, says.

The three are falsely implicated in a murder and, in trying to clear their names, uncover a broader and more sinister conspiracy.

Amsterdam is based on a mysterious blend of fact and fiction

Keen viewers watching the trailer may have noted the following message flash by: “A lot of this actually happened. Three friends altered the course of American history.”

The synopsis confirms that Amsterdam is based on a true story blended with fiction. Amsterdam’s synopsis reads:

“A fascinating and richly intricate tale that brilliantly weaves historical fact with fiction for a timely, cinematic experience. 20th Century Studios’ and New Regency’s original crime epic about three close friends who find themselves at the center of one of the most shocking secret plots in American history.”

The synopsis and trailer are pretty vague about the true story inspiring the film. We suspect the filmmakers don’t want to dampen fan anticipation about the movie by sharing crucial details about it.

Therefore, we may have to wait until the film’s release to find out the true story behind Amsterdam.
